What does MMA stand for?
MMA stands for mixed martial arts. Fighters can punch, kick, use knees and elbows, take each other down and keep fighting on the ground. It grew out of contests between different martial arts, and fighters now train in several of them.

What is an MMA fighter?
An MMA fighter is someone who competes in MMA, as an amateur or a professional. Most people who train at an MMA gym never fight: they train for fitness, confidence or the challenge. Fighters train every part of the sport and spar regularly.
What happens in an MMA fight?
Professional fights are usually three five-minute rounds, or five rounds for title fights, in a cage or ring. A fight ends with a knockout, a submission (a joint lock or choke that makes the opponent tap), the referee or doctor stopping it, or the judges' decision. Amateur fights add protection, such as shin guards, and usually ban some strikes.
What is a first MMA class like?
Expect a warm-up, then a technique shown by the coach and practised with a partner, then drills. Bring shorts, a T-shirt or rash guard, water and a gum shield if you have one; many gyms lend gloves for a first class. Tell the coach it's your first session.
Do you have to spar?
No. Sparring is usually optional for beginners, and gyms tend to build up to it with controlled drills. Ask the gym how they introduce sparring before you join.
